Joomla vs WordPress

Are you using Joomla and looking to switch to WordPress or vice versa?

To be honest both of these website systems are awesome, they aren’t perfect as both have there ups and downs but on a whole they do a great job of managing your website’s content.  If you are updating your own site then you will probably find it easier to navigate your way around WordPress, with pages and posts it pretty simple to work out once you have made a few posts or edits. The wordPress media system for adding images is definitely a benefit, it’s easy to simply upload images and add them to your page. The downside is you can’t assign images to folders to make managing files easier later on without a plugin. With plugins to enhance the system images can be reduced to speed up the site.  Joomla is not as easy in the image department, we install JCE editor to give more options for loading up images and adding them to pages, however Joomla offers a folder system so you can assign files and images into separate files easily.

Can Both Of These Website Systems Can Be Designed As An Effective Advertising Tool…YES!!!

You simply cannot run a business these days without having a website to support it. Whether you use that website to simply maintain an online presence for your business or whether your website is your business generating sales, leads and enquiries, choosing the right Content Management System (CMS) is a critical step in ensuring that your website is going to function the way you want it to and serve your online business needs in the most efficient and user friendly way possible. So, how do you choose a CMS? Which CMS is better; Joomla or WordPress? Which one will best serve your specific needs?

The truth is, there’s no “one size fits all” answer to those questions, as each website’s needs and user expectations are just a bit different from the next guy’s, as is each person’s level of technical expertise when it comes to custom website design and functionality.

You will find WordPress to be hands down the best choice of CMS for one person’s individual purposes, while another website might be more efficiently managed with the Joomla content management system. A basic understanding of the primary differences between WordPress and Joomla will help you choose the best content management system for your specific online business needs.

WordPress – Not Just for Blogging Anymore!

WordPress admittedly began as a platform for blogging and sharing bits of your life with the online community as well as the entire world if you choose. But the truth is that there is more – much more – to WordPress as a CMS than simply being a platform for blogging. The most user friendly of the primary CMS choices, WordPress is easy for even the most “technologically challenged” among us to figure out. WordPress features are constantly updated and improved upon to serve the ever growing and changing needs of the online business community. Customising your website with WordPress is quick and simple, and the WordPress CMS allows you do just about anything that would be required of a website for any small to medium size business.

Woocommerce Shopping Cart

Woocommerce is a shopping cart system that plugs into WordPress and it’s awesome. If you are looking for a great shopping cart system then definitely look at WordPress with Woocommerce installed. It will require setting up with payment processors and shipping calculators but on a whole is quick and fast to add products with all the features you would expect.

That being said, it’s also important to note that WordPress may not be the optimum CMS choice for every business.

The Benefits of Joomla

Joomla, while not being quite as “non-techie” friendly as WordPress, definitely comes with its own set of advantages. Joomla is the programmer’s choice for custom website design. While WordPress was built as a blogging platform with usability in mind, Joomla was designed more specifically as a content management system. Because of this, Joomla offers some features not currently available through WordPress, such as a multiple user interface and expanded customization options. You may find the additional CMS features of Joomla to be absolutely necessary in the functionality of your website, or not at all. So, again, the choice basically comes down to the specific needs of your online business.
While there are some basic differences in the operational styles of these two very popular content management systems, you will find that both WordPress and Joomla maintain great online support communities and a desire to continue improving upon their current technologies. Either way, you win.

Conclusion

The version updating system on Joomla is easier to use and Joomla is more secure than WordPress in my experience. “Both require great hosting, constant backup and updating to keep them secure but also just as important is keeping up to date with trends and new functionality with new software”. Both these systems have active communities and developers updating the system constantly. With the proper maintenance your system should always be kept up to date to benefit from these new features.

In conclusion it really comes down to added functionality or custom coding you may require, Joomla and WordPress both have extensive plugins and components that can be added to your website. The available plugins that are available for each system could save you a small fortune so it’s worth evaluating your options. Basic edits to a page or adding a blog post are simple, both of these systems deal with this in an effective way. If you primarily just want a blog style website I would use WordPress. If you are looking for an advanced product catalogue then Joomla has fantastic options.
